Common mistakes after the lob

Players are often good at executing lobs but make positioning errors after and lose the advantage.  The most common mistakes are:

  1. Not following the lob into the net
  2. Following the lob in but coming too close to the net
  3. Changing sides but remaining at the net

You can see in the diagrams below the 3 mistakes:

1 – Not following it in puts less pressure on the person running for the lob.

2 – If you follow it in but get too close you will get lobbed in return.

3 – If you switch sides but don’t get back you are a target for the net players.

Covering lobs

It is better for your partner to run and get the lob rather than you hit a weak smash, especially if it is going to put you out of position. However, it is important to not only switch sides but get back as far as you can as well. This is because your partner is likely to have to hit a lob in return and the player who hit the lob should have followed it into the net so you will need to defend well by being at the baseline.

You can see how each player moves after a successful lob below:

How to cover your line

Many players move over to their tramline when they don’t need to, they would have the down the line ball covered by maintaining their position in AVP. You should only move to cover your line when the ball from your partner has made the opponent move wider than the tramline.

The correct way to cover your line can be seen below:
